About

Lappy listens for location updates from OwnTracks updates from your phone. This page processes that data to display an estimated lap count.

Reliability varies from phone to phone. Test before the event, and count with your watch.

Usage

  • This page displays only today's data
  • Lap counts are fractional and ignore direction and start/end location
  • Your location displays as a marker while you're on the course
  • Rows show a warning icon ⚠️ if they contain frequent GPS errors greater than 20m. Check your configuration, and keep your phone in an outer pocket if possible.

Privacy

The client app reports GPS, network, and battery percentage information within the geographic bounds of the course. Read more about how we handle your data in the privacy policy.

Make Account

Your credential is anonymous and will expire 30 days after the last location data is recorded. All information collected is publicly viewable.

Phone Setup
  1. Install the OwnTracks app for iOS or Android. The app requires all the location permissions it prompts for, including the ability to run in the background. It will silently fail if they aren’t granted.

iOS: You can review the app's location permissions in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services

  2. Registered participants should get an email within 24 hours with individualized tracking configuration. You can also use "Make an Account" above to create an anonymous account for testing.
  3. Go to the course, open the app on your phone, and ensure the UI says “Move” (over the map on iOS, behind a play button on Android). All the app does is transmit data, so it does not display your lap count. You will only be able to see your information on this webpage.
  4. Run around the fountain, check that you appear on this page, and check that your lap number increases

Every lap—and every partial lap—will be counted. To prevent lap-inflation, we recommend you only open up OwnTracks when you're on the start line.

  5. Kill the app or uninstall it when you are done testing or racing

Troubleshooting:

If your marker appears on the map then grays out, your phone may only be transmitting while the app is foregrounded. See the above note on iOS for providing background ("Always Allow") location access.
