Phone Setup

  1. Install the OwnTracks app for iOS or Android. The app requires all the location permissions it prompts for, including the ability to run in the background. It will silently fail if they aren’t granted.

iOS: You can review the app's location permissions in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services

  2. Registered participants should get an email within 24 hours with individualized tracking configuration. You can also use "Make Account" on the live tracking page to create an anonymous account for testing.
  3. Go to the course, open the app on your phone, and ensure the UI says “Move” (over the map on iOS, behind a play button on Android). All the app does is transmit data, so it does not display your lap count. You will only be able to see your information on the live tracking page.
  4. Run around the fountain, check that you appear on the live page, and check that your lap number increases

Every lap—and every partial lap—will be counted. To prevent lap-inflation, we recommend you only open up OwnTracks when you're on the start line.

  5. Kill the app or uninstall it when you are done testing or racing

Troubleshooting

If your marker appears on the map then grays out, your phone may only be transmitting while the app is foregrounded. See the above note on iOS for providing background ("Always Allow") location access.
